About the job:

In accordance with the Mission and Guiding Behaviors; the Nursing Intern I Surgical Services, in their junior year, and under the direction of the Registered Nurse, will provide basic nursing care to the surgical patient under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, in an atmosphere sensitive to each person’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.  Functions within the standards, policies, procedures and guidelines of the Organization.

  • The Surgery RN Intern performs within the scope of service allowed by Mount Carmel Heath System, under the directs supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Performs observable tasks including those related to direct patient care, including pre/post-operative patient assessment, operating room preparation, and education of the patient and family in collaboration with the supervising RN.
  • Participate in and observes OR procedures and processes in collaboration with the supervising RN.
  • Assists in providing safe positioning of patients under the direct supervision of the RN.
  • Assists in surgical case preparation (equipment, supplies, and instruments).
  • Assists with selection and application of appropriate wound dressing.
  • Communicates and collaborates with OR and multidisciplinary teams when caring for the patient.
  • Assists with OR preparation and turnover, including obtaining correct instruments for surgical procedure and proper cleaning and maintenance of instruments and equipment specific to the OR environment.
  • Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including taking blood glucose measurements, recording intake and output, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, and eating.
  • Performs ordered EKGs and phlebotomy according to policy and per documented training and competency assessment.
  • Assists with keeping patient rooms stocked, clean, and orderly.
  • Responsible for the preparation, maintenance and cleaning of equipment and supplies and assists in performing invasive endoscopic procedures.
  • Processes tissue and bodily fluids specimens
  • Maintains the GI procedure area in a clean, safe condition. Ensures necessary equipment and supplies are available for procedures.
  • Orientation and training in decontamination process procedures, assembly process procedures, sterilization process and procedures, sterile storage and inventory control process procedures and training in case cart preparation process utilizing appropriate pick sheets/preference cards.
  • Participates in and fosters a performance improvement approach that includes both intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities.
  • Responsible for compliance with Organizational Integrity through raising questions and promptly reporting actual or potential wrongdoing.
  • All other duties as assigned.

What we're looking for:

  • Education: High School Diploma and currently enrolled int eh Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at the Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCON) beginning their final year.
  • Licensure / Certification: BLS accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Experience: Previous healthcare experience preferred.
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 required.
