Summary:

The Sterile Processing Manager manages the entire range of Sterile Processing services at their respective facilities. The manager is responsible for operating a highly complex department, functioning under the scrutiny of medical professionals, regulatory bodies and Federal and State laws. This position involves numerous internal and external relationships in the performance of the duties. This incumbent interacts daily with a wide variety of staff, disciplines and customers. The Sterile processing manager needs to effectively communicate with all members of their team in order to ensure that everyone is working toward the same goals. The Manager plans and evaluates department activities supporting and reporting to the Director of Surgical Services.

Responsibilities:

Oversees management of sterilization services operationally and fiscally and accomplishes financial objectives by forecasting requirements. Collaborates on annual budget, schedules expenditures, analyzes variances, initiates coaching, and corrective actions.

Collects and analyzes data related to quality or performance improvement projects that apply to perioperative services. Maintains quality service by enforcing quality and customer service standards, analyzes, resolves quality, and customer service problems

Manages the sterilization services team including evaluating sterilization personnel performance, interviewing, selecting and providing guidance, support, and constructive feedback to the team members and other members as appropriate.

Coordinates, facilitates, and manages change within sterilization services. Demonstrates effective communication, consultation, negotiation, and collaboration skills with members of the sterilization team and other stakeholders.

Reviews the sterilization methods used by the facility to ensure that they meet sterilization standards and ensures all sterilization equipment is functioning properly and ordering repairs when necessary. Ensures sterilization processes meet regulatory requirements such as sterilization cycle time and temperature

Identifies staff training needs and collaborates with the Sterile Processing Education Specialist to provide guidance and support for staff education and certification

Reviews sterilization records for accuracy and completeness, and making any necessary corrections and ensures that the policies, procedures and practices comply with the standards established by regulatory agencies.

Directs the cleaning, decontaminating, inspection, assembly, and inventory of a wide variety of complex surgical instruments and instrument sets.

Oversees the operation and troubleshooting of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization equipment and advises customers on proper cleaning, packaging and sterilization techniques.

Maintains knowledge of Sterile Processing standards, techniques, instrumentation and equipment through participation in professional organizations and attendance at relevant continuing education programs and conferences.

Interacts closely with the Surgical Services, Infection Control, Risk Management and Safety departments to identify and mitigate potential patient safety issues.

Other information:

Education

Minimum: Associates Degree in Healthcare, Operations or related field.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare, Operations or related field.

Experience

Minimum: three (3) years of progressively responsible lead work, supervisory, or management experience in Sterile Processing or Surgical Services.

Preferred: Five (5) years of experience managing a Sterile Processing department.

Licenses & Certifications: Minimum Professional Sterile Processing Certification (CRCST or CSPDT)
