Summary

Position Summary

Employees are encouraged to support Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s involvement in the community we serve. Responsible for the continuous improvement of quality care as it relates to providing Patient Observation. Responsible for providing continual observation of adolescent, adult and geriatric patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self-injury or harm to others.

 

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Highschool/GED

Experience

  • Entry level

License/Registration/Certifications       

  • BLS
  • CPI

 

Preferred Requirements

Preferred Education

  • Associate degree in social services.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in acute healthcare setting.

Preferred License/Registration/Certifications   

  • Experience with children, adults, adolescents, and dual diagnosed patients.

 

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Always keep patient in view. Ensure dignity during toileting and bathing while maintaining direct visual contact to ensure patient safety.
  • Document patient behavior/activity every 15 minutes on the flow Sheet.
  • Notify the nurse of any change in patient behavior, verbalization of self-injurious intent, new knowledge of

      significant information attempts to leave against medical advice, or any potentially unsafe situation.

  • Verify safety of dietary tray prior to delivery to patient.
  • Maintain visual contact with patient during visitation from non-health care providers. May step out of the patient’s room when licensed care provider is in attendance but must remain within visual distance of patient door to readily resume observation role.
  • Directs all items brought for the patient by visitor/family to the patient’s nurse for examination before

       allowing item(s) to be given to the patient.

  • Continuously monitor patient environment for potentially dangerous items that could be used as weapons or for self-harm. Refer to Psych-Safe Room Check List.
  • Will not engage in discussions with the patient regarding his/her medical or psychiatric condition, or plan of care, nor offer suggestions. The patient will be referred to the nurse for any questions/concerns regarding care or treatment.
  • Advises all visitors that there are no bags, purses, book bags or diaper bags allowed in the patient’s room while visiting.
