Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Director Diagnostic and Ancillary Services, the Supervisor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) assumes shift responsibility in managing the human and material resources of the Emergency Medical Services department in order to provide quality patient care and an environment conducive to staff growth and professional performance. As a member of the leadership team the Supervisor Emergency Medical Services has the responsibility to provide and coordinate patient care for the designated shift of duty and assists the Director Diagnostic and Ancillary Services with administrative responsibilities such as budget preparation, strategic workforce planning, and personnel decisions. This individual remains clinically competent in area of practice. Interprets and enforces policies and procedures, standards of care and standards of practice with others and demonstrates same through own actions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Completion of an accredited program for Paramedic training; or completion of an accredited nursing program if the applicant is an Emergency Medical Services Registered Nurse (PHRN).
- Bachelor’s preferred.
Experience:
- 3+ years (post graduate) field experience as a Paramedic in an actively operating ALS program.
- 3+ years of leadership (including duty chief) experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work under stressful situations.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Effectively functions as a liaison among staff, physicians, medical center administration, and ancillary departments.

- Knowledge of human resource laws and regulations as they relate to the management of staff.
License/Certification/Registration:
- Current, license by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as an EMT-Paramedic or Health Professional with a current EMSVO Endorsement.
- Completion of the Hazardous Material Operations Level. Must obtain within one year after hire and renew annually.
- Current driver’s license.
- Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews every two years.
- After four months from hire/transfer, meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and renews every two years.
- After six months from hire/transfer, meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and renews every two years.
- Paramedic Board Certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) preferred.
- Emergency Medical Services Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and/or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certification preferred.
- Within three months from the hire/transfer date, completes Crisis Prevention Institute’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI NCI) training and renews every 2 years thereafter.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives minimal supervision from the Director Diagnostic and Ancillary Services. Performs all duties in an independent manner with little or no need for direct supervision.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
Supervises the activities of the unit/department staff.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Unit/Department Supervision
- Financial Management: works with department leadership and the Financial Planning department to develop an monitor budget; ongoing evaluation of productivity; and maximize care efficiency and throughput
- Human Resource Management: Evaluate staffing needs and patterns; utilize recruitment techniques as it relates to staff selection; complete staff evaluations and ensure proper orientation.
- Performance Improvement: utilize lean tools and methodology for identified areas of improvement; use of MDI (manage for daily improvement) strategies to drive outcomes; evaluate and improves customer/patient engagement performance; monitor patient safety reporting; participate in root cause analysis; promote workplace safety; maintain survey and regulatory readiness; just culture; and promote intra/interdepartmental communication
- Foundational thinking skills: apply systems thinking knowledge as an approach to analysis and decision making.
- Technology: use of technology to support decision and improvement activities
- Change management: facilitate change through assessing readiness, involving key stakeholder and those that do the work, communicate changes, and evaluate outcomes.
