POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the department manager, the supervisor assumes responsibility for coordination of staff for day to day operations to provide quality patient care and an environment conducive to staff growth and professional performance.  The supervisor may assist the manager with administrative duties such as budget preparation, strategic workforce planning, and personnel decisions. This individual remains clinically competent in the area of practice and is able to take a direct patient care assignment as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred. May have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in lieu of specific education.

Experience:

  1. 2+ years experience working in a physician group practice preferred.
  2. 3+ years of leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively under stressful situations.

Ability to utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point.

Proven analytical skills with the ability to organize, maintain, process, and analyze large amounts of information and complex issues.

Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and appropriate manner (verbal, nonverbal, written and graphically) with a variety of audiences.

Ability to manage multiple complex assignments and projects.

Exceptional customer service and effective interaction with executives, physicians, staff and patients.

Strong diplomacy and collaboration skills.

Ability to function in an independent manner with little or no need for direct supervision.

Knowledge of human resource laws and regulations as they relate to the management of staff.

License/Certification/Registration:

  1. Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania.
  2. Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives minimal supervision from the department manager.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Supervises the activities of the unit/department staff.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists the Manager and leadership team with but not limited to the following:

Patient Flow and Operational/Clinical Supervision

  • Financial Stewardship: ensure productivity standards and effective efficient use of resources
  • Human Resource Skills: Evaluate staffing needs and patterns;
  • Performance Improvement Skills: monitor patient safety & ensure reporting when necessary; participate in root cause analysis; promote workplace safety; just culture; and promote intra/interdepartmental communication
  • Foundational thinking skills: apply systems thinking knowledge as an approach to analysis and decision making.  Utilizes leadership standard work, manage for daily improvement and other evidence based tools.
  • Technology Skills: use of technology to support patient care delivery and decision making
  • Change management skills: Supports department leadership in the facilitation change through encouraging key stakeholder participation, communicate & reinforce changes, and assist in evaluation of outcomes.
  • Appropriate clinical practice knowledge: maintain knowledge pertinent to scope of responsibility and promote evidence-based practice

  • Maintains and assures staff development and professional competency of department staff through appropriate continuing education and development programs.
    • Develops and administers policies and protocols in order to accomplish departmental objectives.
    • Assures that operational outcomes and results conform to planned objectives.
  • Establishes appropriate individual and departmental standards for employee job performance, productivity management, customer responsiveness, quality assurance, and other areas of departmental operations.
  • Maintains an effective means of routinely monitoring individual and departmental performance on an ongoing basis and comparing results to the established standards.
  • Implements effective and efficient corrective action(s) when individual and/or departmental performance and results fail to satisfy planned objectives.
  • Facilitates process/performance improvement activities to improve the quality of patient care and service delivery.
    • Provides effective data and analysis support for improvement activities.
    • Identifies potential barriers to success of performance improvement projects and recommends appropriate courses of action.
    • Executes deliverables against project milestones.
    • Aggregates data from multiple source systems to enhance clinical and operational performance, including clinical analytic and patient experience platforms.
