Summary

Current SC Nursing License required and ACLS, BCLS preferred. New graduates and experienced RN's are encouraged to apply.

The Registered Nurse, under the direction of the Nurse Manager, utilizes knowledge and skills to provide direct age-specific and culturallly appropriate care through the use of the nursing process based on knowledge of principles of growth and development, serves as a clinical resource, participates in patient and staff education, demonstrates leadership, and serves as a preceptor.

We have six board-certified psychiatrists and six board-certified Nurse Practitioners who specialize in geriatrics or general psychiatry, who visit and evaluate our patients daily. Our psychiatrists also makes rounds in the Emergency Center and provide consultation services to the Church Street and Mary Black Campus hospitals.

Our Geriatric DPU Unit consists of fifteen (15) beds and are typically available for patients age sixty five (65) and over.  Visiting hours are between the hours of 2:30 PM-4:30 PM and 6:30PM - 8:30 PM daily and 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday unless there are extenuating circumstances and then family members will be informed.

The General Psychiatric Unit consists of eleven (11) beds and are available for patients between ages 18 and 60.  Visiting hours are from 7:30 PM until 8:30 PM Monday through Friday and 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

The Involuntary Commitment Unit consists of seven (7) beds for patients eighteen (18) and older who are in need of intensive psychiatric care. Visiting hours are from 7:30 PM until 8:30 PM Monday through Friday and 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

We have on staff  licensed masters-level social workers, registered nurses, case managers, personal care assistants, and occupational therapists on staff to assist with the inpatient care and to provide you with the resources needed to continue the care upon discharge

Emergency patients are treated in the Behavioral Health unit in the Emergency Center.  Some of these patients are admitted to other areas of the hospital due to medical problems rather than psychiatric problems.  Others, especially those under the age of 18, are placed in other facilities if needed so they can receive the appropriate care.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Experience

  • Minimum of one year of recent R.N. experience within the past 5 years preferred.

License/Registration/Certifications             

  • Current R.N. licensure in the state of South Carolina
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS/ENPC

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with patients, families, and other members of the health care team to determine patient priorities and treatments

  • Identifies the need to develop or revise policies and procedures pertaining to specialized patient populations and/or unit and hospital based practices
  • Serves on unit based committees
  • Prioritizes nursing interventions for an assigned group of patients
  • Assesses assigned patients’ medical history, admitting diagnosis and physician’s orders, obtaining nursing history, performing physical assessment, evaluating diagnostic data, and interviewing patient and family to determine patient needs
  • Demonstrates knowledge of professional nursing practice and theory.
  • Assures continuity of care through effective decision making resulting in quality patient care
  • Documents all aspects of patient care by following established charting procedure to show the patient’s progress or any change in the patient’s condition
  • Other Duties as assigned
