Radiology Physics Technician

Performs variety of tasks related to testing of radiological imaging equipment and ensures compliance with radiation safety reporting requirements and regulations.

 

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

o Perform annual/semi-annual physics and radiation safety surveys as required by Federal and State regulations on all x-ray equipment. Generates and organizes all records as required by Federal and State regulations. Analyzes radiation safety testing data and reports any necessary corrective action to the Director of Medical Imaging Physics in the Department of Radiology. (essential)

o Performs necessary follow-up testing after any corrective action has been taken. Works with Radiology modality managers to arrange survey schedules that will least impact patient care. (essential)

o Communicates with staff and service vendors to facilitate necessary repairs, maintenance and other services needed for the safe and effective operation of imaging equipment. (essential)

o Performs radiation safety acceptance testing on all new x-ray equipment. (essential)

o Provides Physics support upon request by Radiology staff to radiologists, modality managers, and technologists. (essential)

o Maintains Physics testing equipment used to perform surveys including shipping equipment to calibration vendors. (essential)

o Performs minor repairs on equipment that is not maintained by third party service vendors. (essential)

o In collaboration with Medical Imaging Physicist, performs radiation shielding calculations and tests.

 

Required Qualifications:

o Masters Degree in Physics, Biophysics, Radiological Physics, Radiological Science, Nuclear Physics, Health Physics, or related scientific discipline, or specific authorization by the Massachusetts Department of Health, Radiation Control Branch

o 3-5 years related work experience.

o Technical training in a field appropriate to perform the primary job requirements.

o Attention to detail.

o Ability to work independently and as a member of the Medical Imaging Physics team. Ability to meet schedule goals and deadlines established by the Director of Medical Imaging Physics.

o Advanced technical computer skills as required for technical support specific to functional area and related systems.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

o 3-5 years experience in a health care institution.

Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.

Independence of Action: Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Work progress is monitored by supervisor/manager.

Written Communications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

 

Social/Environmental Requirements:

Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.

 

Work routine is fairly consistent, but employee needs to be able to use judgment to respond to events several times a week.

 

Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions

 

Several times a week:  Radiation.

 

Several times a month:  Protective equipment required(Respirator,earplugs,mask,gloves,eyewear etc).

 

Health Care Status:  NHCW: No patient contact.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department

 

Sensory Requirements:

Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Monitor Use, Visual clarity <3 feet, Conversation, Monitoring Equipment, Telephone.

 

Physical Requirements:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.

This job requires frequent sitting, standing, Keyboard use.There may be occasional walking, bending neck, bending waist, Reaching-above shoulder height, Reaching-below shoulder height, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 10 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 10 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 25 lbs.

 

 

 

Pay Range:

$79,040.00 USD – $110,240.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
