POSITION SUMMARY
Performs various duties that provide dispensing support to the pharmacists.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- High school education or equivalent.
Experience:
- No previous experience required, but prior experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Proficiency in mathematics. A mathematics test will be administered in the Pharmacy.
- Interaction required with other pharmacist assistants, pharmacists, providers, nurses, other health system employees, and medical sales representatives.
License/Certification/Registration:
None
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives direct supervision from the Manager Pharmacy Services, supervisors, and staff pharmacists. Receives guidance from the lead pharmacist assistant.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintains security and proper storage of sterile products
- Maintains proper storage of reconstituted injectables and final products.
- Delivers products to the patient units maintaining security and proper storage.
- Processes provider orders.
- Maintains hard-copy downtime chronological records for each patient.
- Provides services to Pharmacy customers.
- Receives telephone communication from health system staff, provider offices, and the public. Collects pertinent details and triages call to appropriate staff for follow up when indicated.
- Tends the pharmacy doors and service window.
- Performs unit-dose drug supply processing.
- Accurately fills patient medications using health system refill lists.
- Adjusts each patient's account based on returned doses when necessary.
- Maintains current patient medications using the health system reports.
- Delivers the unit dose medications to the patient units and transfers new drug supply per department procedures.
- Delivers medications to each patient room pass-through or in-room storage cabinet.
- Handles interactions with health system staff, patients, and visitors while delivering into rooms.
- Interacts with patient care staff to help resolve any storage or delivery issues.
- Keeps drug supplies stocked/secured.
- Selects drugs and supplies based on floor stock usage from automated dispensing machines (ADM) reports.
- Replenishes drug stock on all patient units.
- Performs billing functions.
- Performs charging and crediting functions per Corporate Compliance guidelines.
- Performs charging and crediting functions of meds for discharges when necessary.
- Delivers Class II Controlled Substances (CS) to the nursing stations.
- Delivers Class II drugs to ADM after the drugs are dispensed by a Pharmacist.
- Completes all electronic entries.
- Returns all ADM receipts to the Pharmacist.
- Maintains Inventory.
- Performs monthly check of assigned drug storage locations throughout the health system for drugs approaching expiration, proper storage and quantity.
- Performs monthly check of assigned locations in the pharmacy for drugs approaching outdate and proper storage.
- Monitors internal drug stock for quantity on hand and orders additional supplies through the Buyer.
- Restocks front-line dispensing areas from reserve stock as needed.
- Performs and oversees drug repackaging.
- Maintains and operates the solid unit-dose repackaging system
- .Maintains and operates the liquid unit-dose repackaging system.
- Manufactures low-volume liquid unit-dose products using Medi-dose system or oral syringes.
- Ensures quality control of final product packages and labels.
- Establishes proper expiration dating based on product stability and repackaging mechanism.
- Maintains repackaging log per regulations.
- Collects a patient medication history
- Collects a patient medication history on all patients in the Emergency Department (with a primary focus on admitted patients) by discussion with patient, referencing home medication list, calling and involving external resources to provide the physician a complete medication list for review.
- Speaks with the patient and takes a medication history.
- Resources patient’s medication list.
- References external resources.
- Documents the drug, dose, and frequency in the electronic record.
- Participates in the development of policies and procedures to improve the medication reconciliation process.
- Collaborates with the patient, significant others, and health care providers in providing the physician the most updated and accurate medication list.
- Communicates with the patient, significant others and health care providers regarding obtaining the most accurate medication history for the patient.
- Consults with health care providers and facilities for information.
- Picks-up and makes delivery rounds throughout the health system.
- Performs daily Code Cart quality control checks for assigned area(s).
- Records all Workload Units not captured by Meditech.
- Records and types meeting minutes.
- Performs basic word-processing and spreadsheet functions.
- Operates the pneumatic tube system.
- Complies with the safety program in accordance with health system policies:
- Attends assigned safety training sessions.
- Complies with health system safety policies and encourages persons under his/her direction to do the same.
- Documents attendance at required training on Staff Development/Education and Training Record.
- A Pharmacy Technician I may not perform the following duties:
- Accept or transcribe an oral order or telephone prescription.
- Enter or be in a pharmacy if a pharmacist is not on duty.
- Perform any act within the practice of pharmacy that involves discretion or independent professional judgment.
- Perform a duty until trained and the duty has been specified in a written protocol
