The Transition to Practice Nurse Residency Program, is designed to extend the basic education and skills of the graduate nurse and support them in the transition to a professional nurse over the course of a 12-month program. The residency focuses on providing a culture where professional growth and learning is prioritized and supported. Our nurse residents are the future of healthcare in our community which is why it is important to provide them the tools, training, and support they need for their success as they begin a new career.

 

  • Proven, evidence-based 12-month program, with full-time commitment
  • Standardized orientation schedule comprised of organizational onboarding, skill acquisition, and medical-surgical rotation
  • Skill acquisition rotations designed to provide foundational learning experiences and build confidence prior to caring for a patient assignment based on quality safety initiatives
  • Paired with a trained preceptor for the integration and socialization in the culture of professional nursing
  • Provide direct patient care in an acute care setting maintaining a culture where professional growth and learning is fostered in a safe and trustful environment
  • Support from experienced mentors, educators, and leadership
  • Improving prioritization and organizational skills as well as self-confidence in patient assessments, foundational interventions, and psychomotor skills
  • Professional Development Sessions focused on clinical judgment, knowledge application and professional growth as well as facilitated debriefings throughout the 12-month program
  • Creation of an evidence-based project designed to integrate nurse residents into a professional career as a lifelong learner
  • Supports and follows Central Maine Healthcare Service standards, including mission, vision, and values
  • Act in accordance with nursing guidelines, policies and procedures both of the organization and the Maine State Board of Nursing
  • Patient and family centered care across the continuum, focusing on dignity and respect
  • Interpersonal communication skills for effectively communicating with the entire healthcare team
  • Meets mandatory attendance for professional development sessions over the 12-moth residency program

 

Essential Duties:

  • Provides direct and indirect patient care in the acute care setting using time management skills to care for patients
  • Obtains nursing history, performs nursing assessment and develops plan of care for patients
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families
  • Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served
  • Consults other health team members/departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education
  • Completes competency-based orientation
  • Educating and advocating for our patients. This includes making sure patients and their families understand the health issues they’re facing and the potential resources available to them, while serving as their advocate in order to promote the best possible outcome for each patient
  • A passion to bring kindness to both patients and coworkers that promotes a team-building environment and a great place to work each day

 

Education and Experience:

  • Recent graduate from an accredited ADN or BSN program with less than 1-year experience
  • Active nurse licensure or eligible to obtain Maine State licensure
  • Active BLS certification
