POSITION SUMMARY

Assist physicians with various aspects of patient care (including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks) ensuring patient satisfaction.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  1. High School education or equivalent is required
  2. Successful completion of Medical Assistant program preferred or equivalent healthcare program or minimum of one year of direct patient care experience.
  3. Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.

Experience:

  1. Previous Medical Assistant experience preferred.

  2. Supports and encourages harmonious communication skills.
  3. Uses verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills.

  5. Communicates in highly professional manner at all times.

License/Certification/Registration:

  1. BLS required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component.
  2. Successful completion of Medical Assistant certification examination required within six (6) months of hire/transfer or within six (6) months of lapsed certification.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general supervision from the Practice Manager/Provider(s).  May also be accountable to Clinical Coordinator, Administrative Coordinator, or Director of Operations.  Performs under standard practices which enables the employee to proceed alone on routine work assignments referring questionable cases to the provider responsible for the assigned patients.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Clinical Duties (as assigned after demonstrating clinical competency)
    1. Greets patients and obtains necessary patient information/documentation.
    2. Prepares patients for examination and/or treatment and documentation.
    3. Obtains patient histories.
    4. Obtains vital signs.
    5. Measures and records accurate height and weight.
    6. Completes specimen preparation and collection.
    7. Performs point of care testing when required.
    8. Performs medication reconciliation as part of the rooming process.
    9. Completes all required quality workflows as part of the rooming process.
    10. Provides instructions for testing procedures to patients.
    11. Administers injections/vaccinations.
    12. Administers non-controlled prescribed injections and medications, observes reactions and documents in the patient’s file.
    13. Cleans, disinfects and stocks examination rooms with required instruments and supplies.
    14. Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
    15. Prepares, sterilizes and maintains supplies and equipment for patient treatments.
    16. Participates as a member of the clinical question team by recording and addressing patient or other phone calls, as appropriate, for the providers.
  2. Administrative Duties
    1. Obtains lab/imaging reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. Completes forms/requisitions as needed. Schedules appointments. Verifies insurance coverage and patient demographics. Prepares and manages charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately.
    2. Performs front desk/administrative duties including but not limited to patient registration, scheduling of appointments, collecting appropriate co-payments, responsible for maintaining the cash drawer and any other duties as required for patient check in/check out.
    3. Answers calls and provides pertinent information including patient education as directed.
    4. Sends/receives patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance, Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
    5. Checks schedules and organizes patient flow. Accompanies patients to exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc. Collects patient information/history; taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines. Relays instructions to patients/families.
  3. Participates in quality improvement activities and processes.
  4. Complies with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintains strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data. Complies with all Mount Nittany Health policies and procedures.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
