Laboratory Information System and Technology Coordinator
Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Oversees the day-to-day performance of the clinical laboratory computer system; directs departmental computer training and orientation; performs dictionary changes; assists in policy and procedure development; coordinates downtime procedures; assures CAP regulations and inspection criteria followed for the LIS. Coordinates activities with IS Department and Manager.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and ASCP certified or Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical or biological sciences.
Experience:
- 5 years of experience in a Hospital Laboratory setting
- Previous Laboratory Information System experience is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and cooperative personality for dealing with other hospital departments, medical staff, patients, and the community.
- Must have a broad technical knowledge in clinical pathology.
- Proficiency with PC's and experience with a variety of information systems desirable.
- Problem solving and analytical thinking skills essential.
- Demonstrated working understanding of laboratory operations and practices strong organizational and/or project management skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills

License/Certification/Registration:
- Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP), MT (AMT), or equivalent registration.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives minimal supervision from the Laboratory Manager and medical director Pathology.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1.Serve as the primary contact for Laboratory Information Systems.
a.Monitors daily operations of the clinical laboratory information system. Troubleshoot daily operations and system error logs and initiate corrective action.
b.Completes Laboratory Information System maintenance, including monitoring integrity and functioning of multiple outbound interfaces such as reference labs, department of health compliance reporting, reference lab billing, proficiency direct connect, failed faxes from the Hospital System and data integrity of the Blood Bank module.
c.Coordinates with IS Installs and monitors instrument interfaces. Assures all hardware, middleware, and interface communication issues are identified and resolved.
d.Troubleshoot complex technical issues at a workstation and application/middleware level and when appropriate, escalate to the Hospital IT department, Hospital System vendor or Third party vendor. Coordinates correction action and documentation of resolutions.
e.Directs and oversees departmental computer training and orientation.
f.Coordinates downtime activities; documents corrective action.
g.Coordinates with other Medical Center clinical departments to assure proper interface function and computer reporting.
h.Coordinates Laboratory Information Systems budgetary needs, capital acquisition and installation of Laboratory Information Systems related hardware and software. Identifies site requirements for system modules.
i.Coordinates selection, installation and support of Laboratory Information System peripherals, label printers and scanners, computers, laptops and printers.
2.Consults with Laboratory Accreditation Coordinator to complete the following tasks:
a.Maintains LIS procedures and practices in accord with CAP, TJC, and Pennsylvania State Department of Health standards.
b.Assists with validation and implementation of new testing or implementation of new lab equipment. Gives approval to move to production. Performs dictionary build and changes including rules and label formats; maintains integrity and accuracy of dictionary.
c.Develops and performs quality assurance reviews to monitor integrity of reporting on LIS
d.Enforces and adheres to lab compliance policies through monitoring various reports including NPR reports for Medicare billing and HIM lists.
3.Responsible for processing rejection batches, management reports and quality checks.
a.Reviews, investigates and corrects billing rejections and discrepancies via BAR applications or through correspondence with the billing department.
b.Pulls daily management reports to identify and corrects duplicate orders.
c.Under the direction of laboratory supervisor, makes appropriate credits to laboratory charges.
d.Obtain and update billing codes for laboratory testing. Perform complex manual billing and billing corrections as needed. Work with billing department on new changes, yearly Medicare updates and audits.
4.Maintains current personal expertise in subspecialty through active professional society involvement and/or continuing education activities.
5.Participates and contributes to multiple projects for different business stakeholders in collaboration with Hospital and Physician group IT.
6.Utilizes communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills to achieve clinical and financial outcomes.
7.Monitors the environment for market trends, reimbursement changes, technology advances, regulatory issues and competitive forces that impact areas of responsibility and takes appropriate action.
8.Provides a wide variety of administrative responsibilities in support of laboratory manager, multiple supervisors, department section heads and other leadership positions.
a.Develops documents and prepares various reports involving the use of software features including but not limited to, infocenter and spreadsheets, graphs, charts and tables.
