Summary:

Works closely with physicists, radiation oncologists and Therapists. The medical dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology treatment planning team, familiar with the physical and geometric characteristics of the radiation equipment and radioactive sources commonly employed, with the training and expertise necessary to measure and generate radiation dose distributions and calculations under the direction of the medical physicist and radiation oncologist.

 

 

 

Responsibilities:

Discusses the patient's diagnosis and desired treatment plan with the radiation oncologist.

Following the dose prescription specified by the radiation oncologist, plans a treatment technique by means of computer and/or manual computations that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose to a defined tumor volume.

 Coordinates treatment tumor localizations (including CT and MRI when indicated) for radiation therapy treatment planning in preparation for simulation.

Coordinates, supervises, and performs treatment simulations, localizes tumor by topographical landmarks and prepares contour(s) of the patient. Performs dosage calculation in the patient's radiation therapy chart, applying isodose charts or computer derived isodoses to the treatment problem to produce a plan for presentation to the radiation oncologist.

 Verifies the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by a medical physicist.

Supervises and/or assists in the planning and fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices.

Supervises and/or assists in the planning and the fabrication of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.

Prepares set-up sheet and/or enters information into record/verify system detailing information relating to daily dose, daily dose per field, field weighting, wedges, etc. Supervises and/or assists in the planning and the fabrication of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.

 Supervises the therapy staff in implementation of the treatment plan (correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangements, and all other treatment parameters). Is responsible for and supervises the application of specific methods of dosimetry (ion chamber, TLD, or film) to special procedures; also includes in vivo dosimetry such as diodes, etc.

Teaches applied aspects of dosimetry to radiation therapists or students, as assigned.

May be involved in clinical research either with ongoing national treatment studies, or for the development and implementation of new techniques.

Maintains log books as necessary of treatment plans for external beam and brachy therapy procedures and submits documentation of associated CPT codes and charges in a timely manner; this applies to any other chargeable procedures.

 

 

Credentials:
Essential:
* ARRT-T - Radiation Therapist
* DE RADIATION - Delaware State Radiation license

Other information:

At least 3-5 years as a clinical dosimetriston an Eclipse treatment planning system Version 13 or above.

Must be a Certified Medical Dosimetrist (MDCB).

Able to follow RTOG protocols when needed.

ARRT-T - Radiation Therapistpreferred

Bachelor of Science (BS)preferred but not mandatory.

Education specialization:Radiation Oncology / Dosimetry

Varian Eclipse training: IMRT, SBRTpreferred
