Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Plans, organizes, and coordinates the delivery of pastoral care to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of all patients, family members and Mount Nittany Health staff. Provides direct pastoral care to patients, families, and Mount Nittany Health staff as appropriate.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Masters of Divinity degree from an accredited theological school, preferred.
- A minimum of 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education, preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum one year of professional pastoral and spiritual care experience.
- Minimum of two years’ professional experience as a hospital Chaplain is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Ability to demonstrate the competencies and ethical standards of professional chaplaincy.
License/Certification/Registration:
Ordination, ecclesiastical, or faith leader endorsement from a nationally recognized church, denomination, or faith group.
Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) or Associate Certified Chaplain (ACC) through a nationally recognized certifying body, preferred.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives minimal supervision from the Supervisor Professional and Organizational Development.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
Supervises the activities of the volunteer & spiritual pastoral staff.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides direct pastoral care as appropriate.
- Ensures the patients, upon admission, are informed of spiritual opportunities available within the medical center; makes follow up visits as needed.
- Coordinates the provision of Pastoral & Spiritual Care services to patients, families and Mount Nittany Health personnel; consults with physician and nursing staff to assess patient, family and staff needs.
- Maintains commitment to shared responsibility of the day to day operations of Pastoral & Spiritual Care in the medical center. Builds team cooperation by establishing procedures for notifying local clergy of the religious needs voiced by patients. Assigns tasks to the voluntary pastoral staff and refers them to Medical Center departments as needed.
- Consults with clergy of all faiths in order that visits with the medical center may enhance the patient’s overall therapeutic goals.
- Coordinates and/or conducts worship or memorial services when and where appropriate. Provides the sacraments, including communion and baptism, while showing sensitivity and respect for varying faiths’ traditions.
- Develops, implements, and revises goals and objectives of the Pastoral Care in conjunction with the overall goals and objectives of the Mount Nittany Health. Approves all printed materials distributed in the name of the Pastoral Care.
- Coordinates and plans for department activities.
- Meets regularly with Supervisor Professional and Organizational Development to discuss goals, concerns, and needs and serves as liaison between administration and the ministerial community.
- Establishes and implements policy and procedures for department operations; reviews annually or as needed.
- Responsible for input to operating, capital and FTE budget preparation within appropriate time frames.
- Provides twenty-four hour availability for crisis; maintains schedule flexibility to provide/coordinate appropriate services during crisis/disaster situations.
- Recruits, trains, schedules, and monitors volunteer clergy to provide pastoral coverage outside normally scheduled business hours and during periods of absence due to vacations and conferences.
- Ensures appropriate documentation and record keeping for administrative and quality assurance purposes.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
