Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Performs sonographic procedures to assist in the diagnosis of medical conditions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a specialized training program in Ultrasonic Technology or on-the-job training with a registered sonographer preferred.
Experience:
- One year of experience performing ultrasound procedures in a hospital, clinic or physician’s office preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of ultrasound equipment and procedures, protocols and safety hazards common to administering ultrasounds including equipment, body mechanics and patient movement.
- Knowledge of physician office procedures, ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines.
- Skill in conducting equipment operation training to co-workers.
- Ability to operate a computer and access applicable programs.
- Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively and to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot equipment problems and perform simple adjustments.
- Skill in the production and communication of sonograms.
License/Certification/Registration:
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or registry eligible for cardiac sonography;
- Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.

Receives general supervision from the Practice Manager.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Obtains essential information from patients, medical records and previous scans for correlation.
- Performs ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positioning patient, selecting the appropriate scan images to be recorded and obtaining diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient.
- Ensures all procedures are conducted following established protocols and procedures.
- Submits the ultrasound exam to the appropriate physician for interpretation.
- Enters exam information into computer and creates minor analysis of information.
- Reviews orders from referring physicians for completeness and ensures diagnoses are appropriate for reimbursement.
- Maintains equipment maintenance records.
- Documents patient information, test and examination results and care provided in the patient’s paper or electronic health record.
- Using the electronic health record, documents and bills for services rendered.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
