POSITION SUMMARY

Performs sonographic procedures to assist in the diagnosis of medical conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Completion of a specialized training program in Ultrasonic Technology or on-the-job training with a registered sonographer preferred.

Experience:

1. One year of experience performing ultrasound procedures in a hospital, clinic or physician’s office preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

1. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
2. Knowledge of ultrasound equipment and procedures, protocols and safety hazards common to administering ultrasounds including equipment, body mechanics and patient movement.
3. Knowledge of physician office procedures, ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines.
4. Skill in conducting equipment operation training to co-workers.
5. Ability to operate a computer and access applicable programs.
6. Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively and to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.
7. Ability to identify and troubleshoot equipment problems and perform simple adjustments.
8. Skill in the production and communication of sonograms.

License/Certification/Registration:

1. Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or registry eligible for cardiac sonography;
2. Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Obtains essential information from patients, medical records and previous scans for correlation.
2. Performs ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positioning patient, selecting the appropriate scan images to be recorded and obtaining diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient.
3. Ensures all procedures are conducted following established protocols and procedures.
4. Submits the ultrasound exam to the appropriate physician for interpretation.
5. Enters exam information into computer and creates minor analysis of information.
6. Reviews orders from referring physicians for completeness and ensures diagnoses are appropriate for reimbursement.
7. Maintains equipment maintenance records.
8. Documents patient information, test and examination results and care provided in the patient’s paper or electronic health record.
9. Using the electronic health record, documents and bills for services rendered.
