Position Description

The Assistant Professor of Public Health is a tenure-track faculty member responsible for excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, public health practice, and service. The position supports the School's mission to advance population health through high-quality education, applied research, and meaningful engagement with communities and partners. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction, maintain an active and sustainable program of scholarship, mentor students, and participate in institutional and professional service.

Rank of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor and applicable salary are dependent upon candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Major/Essential Functions

Teaching and Curriculum Development:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate-level public health courses aligned with programmatic and accreditation requirements.
  • Design, deliver, and continuously improve course content using evidence-based pedagogical practices appropriate for in-person, hybrid, and online modalities.
  • Develop and revise course syllabi, learning outcomes, assessments, and instructional materials consistent with institutional policies and curricular standards.
  • Participate in curriculum development, review, and assessment activities at the program and school levels.
  • Mentor students in applied practice experiences, integrative learning experiences, independent studies, and capstone or thesis projects, as appropriate.

Scholarship and Research:

  • Establish and maintain an independent and/or collaborative program of scholarship appropriate to rank and discipline.
  • Produce peer-reviewed scholarly outputs, including journal articles, applied research reports, or other discipline-appropriate products.
  • Seek external and internal funding to support research and scholarly activity, as appropriate to career stage.
  • Disseminate research findings through professional presentations, conferences, and other scholarly venues.
  • Integrate scholarly activity with teaching and, where appropriate, public health practice.

Public Health Practice:

  • Contribute to applied public health practice through partnerships with community organizations, public agencies, healthcare systems, or other stakeholders, as appropriate to the faculty member’s area of expertise.
  • Support practice-based learning opportunities for students through applied projects, field experiences, or community-engaged activities.
  • Translate research and academic expertise into practical applications that advance population health and inform policy or practice.

Service: 

  • Participate in departmental, school, college, and university service, including committee work and shared governance.
  • Contribute to professional service at the local, state, national, or international level, as appropriate.
  • Engage in community or institutional activities that support the mission and strategic goals of the school.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate (PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD, or equivalent) in public health or a closely related field.
  • Applicants who are ABD (All But Dissertation) or in the final stages of doctoral completion are encouraged to apply, provided degree completion is expected by December 31, 2026.
  • Doctoral training in public health, population health, epidemiology, health promotion and disease prevention, health education, health psychology, biomedical sciences, community health, interdisciplinary studies, or a closely related discipline. Will also consider doctoral training in a business/commerce field with significant experience in the public health or nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and student mentorship at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity appropriate to career stage (e.g., publications, manuscripts under review, professional presentations).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including online, hybrid, or face-to-face instruction.
  • Experience with educational technologies and learning management systems, including course development, assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Experience designing or revising courses, curricula, and instructional materials.
  • Professional and/or leadership experience in industry, public health practice, healthcare, nonprofit, or community-based settings.
  • Experience in public health with a focus on one or more of the following areas:
    • implementation sciences,
    • evaluation research,
    • rural health,
    • business of public health,
    • policy analysis, and
    • one health.
  • Evidence of grant writing activity or funding success for research, training, or service-related projects.
  • Demonstrated record of, or clear potential for, collaborative and applied research, including co-authored publications, professional reports, or conference presentations.
