Summary:

The Echocardiography Extern is a training/orientation position to develop the skills, knowledge, and critical reasoning to obtain certification/Registry/Licensing in the specific modality. The Echocardiography Extern performs diagnostic procedures for assigned patients. Pursues experiences that serve to establish a basis upon which to guide practice and is expected to provide safe care with supervision and guidance from experienced staff. The Extern incorporates theoretical knowledge into clinical situations and is able to perform core skills, carry out a plan of care, and may seek consultation for solutions. The Echocardiography Extern practices the responsibilities of an Echocardiography Technician; however, practice is primarily guided by Preceptor, referencing policies, procedures, and standards.

Responsibilities:

Performs non-invasive routine and emergent adult cardiac ultrasound examinations; obtains history, explains procedure to patient, and uses good judgement in determining if additional images are necessary for proper diagnosis. Provides 2D and 3D echo studies; performs specialized non-invasive echo studies including stress echo, and contrast echo.

Assists the physician in providing diagnostic and therapeutic testing/procedures in specialized and invasive cardiac procedures including TEE, TAVR, ASD closures, CABG’s, and ablations.

Ensures proper maintenance and care of the equipment and supplies, including appropriate procedure, technique and documentation in the disinfection of machines, and probes for patient safety.

Maintains accurate patient documentation, including the echo data management system.

Maintains and develops professional skills and knowledge and promoting continuous improvement of workplace practices.

Requirements:

• HS DIPLOMA/GED
• BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)
• REGISTERED CARDIAC SONOGRAPHER (RCS)

Be eligible to obtain Cardiac Sonography national accreditations by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) by completing an appropriate accredited program.

Must be able to pass and obtain Cardiac Sonography national accreditations by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS) within 6 months of beginning Echocardiography Extern Role.
