Position Summary

Coordinates the referral of patients to medical specialists as requested by physicians, including determining appropriate medical center affiliate to which to refer patients and obtaining pre-authorization for the referral.
Job Requirement
Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of experience in the health care field as a medical office assistant or comparable experience.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
None required.
Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements
Preferred: (Recent Experience, within the last 5 years, Experience with the following)- Recent experience with local insurance carriers and their guidelines in referral management i.e. Optum products, Medicare Advantage Plans & Medicaid HMO Plans;
- Recent experience in working with ICD10;
- Two years recent experience processing physician referrals, including obtaining prior authorizations either via web portal or fax;
- Recent experience with hands on communication with patients, physicians and other clinical staff to complete referral;
- Recent experience with multiple specialties.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements
Medical terminology; physician medical specialties; community medical/health care services; computers and associated software; department and hospital safety practices and principles; infection control policies and practices; patient rights; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in:
Organizing and prioritizing work; maintaining information/data; using a personal computer and application software programs; networking with other health care organizations; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, stamina to remain seated for long periods of time and maintain concentration, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or an negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
