Inpatient Services Medical/Surgical/Telemetry 3BV unit is located on the 3rd floor of the Pelham Medical Center. It is comprised of 20-beds designated for the Medical Surgical population, all of which may be remote telemetry monitored. (This includes 3 negative pressure rooms and 3 hemodialysis ready rooms).

Position Summary


The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is responsible for patient related clerical activities, departmental  clerical duties, , and other unit activities, as assigned. The PCA must be able to provide and understand the specific communication needs of patients, families, and visitors. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the PCA provides focused non-licensed clinical care for patients throughout the age continuum including phlebotomy, basic nursing skills, etc., and environmental assistance to facilitate quality service and improve patient outcomes.  The PCA will document and communicate with team members in a timely manner about patient progress, needs and problems. The PCA will collaborate with Leadership in developing and implementing the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Systems, Mission, and Goals.


Minimum Requirements



  • High School Graduate or equivalent


  • Graduate Nurse OR CNA, EMT, Surgical Technician, Medical Assistant OR completion of 1st semester of Nursing Clinicals OR one-year in healthcare setting


  • BLS

  • Performs vital signs, weights/heights, intakes and outputs with accuracy and within established time frame and/or as requested
  • Documents written and verbal communication, which is timely and effective, communicates changes in patient status, actual and potential needs of patient/families/visitors to registered nurse
  • Provides care relative to the age-specific needs of the patient on the unit by demonstrating knowledge of the principles of growth and development
  • Knowledgeable in use of and response to Facility Alerts/Medical Alerts/Medical Emergency Systems
  • Identifies areas for improvement and seeks ways to work on self-defined weaknesses
  • Remains committed to unit, department and division goals
  • Attends continuing education classes for improvement offered at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System
  • Reports risk management concerns to appropriate person
  • Adheres to proper chain of command.
  • Performs, at a minimum, Hourly Rounds
  • Participates in Bedside Shift Report
  • Meets continuing education requirements, demonstrates knowledge of and ensures compliance with all clinical expectations of regulatory agency requirements (DNV, DHEC, CMS)

  2. Assists with admissions, discharges, transferring and placing patients

  1. Collects as directed and records routine non-sterile specimens

  1. Performs finger stick blood glucose testing
  2. Performs and records peri and urinary catheter care as directed
  3. Performs and records chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) baths as directed
  4. Measures and records PO intake and output
  5. Takes and records height and weight as directed
  6. Performs and records as directed turning, positioning, coughing and deep breathing patients.
  7. Performs placement of anti-embolic devices (TED hose, Sequential Compression Devices and Foot Pumps)
  8. With proven competency, performs other functions for particular specialty areas (enemas, placement of monitoring leads, documentation)
  • Other Duties as Assigned
