Title:  Manager – Perioperative Business

Position Objective:

The Perioperative Business Managers function is to maintain knowledge of OR processes, to use critical skills to drive effective business practices for Perioperative Services. The manager’s focus is to integrate the financial and operational knowledge impacting overall financial and quality management of the OR and inform and influence decision making. Strong relationships with OR operational leadership (including team leaders) and surgeons is essential so this role must live in Perioperative Services. The manager is responsible for data management, decision making and maintaining dashboards and metrics developed in collaboration with clinical management as it relates to surgery scheduling, surgery volume and revenue. These efforts support the implementation of the operational and strategic plan, including implementation of LEAN practices. This role will be responsible for the business functions of the surgical services enterprise which includes budget support ( both operations and capital), data analysis and select supply chain functions, including vendor management, analysis required for Surgical Value analysis decision making and tracking, cost benefit analysis, etc.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Develops information tracking systems, preparing and displaying data concerning operations, improvement initiatives and system changes.
  2. Develops, recommends, and implements strategies for cost management and revenue maximization including select supply chain functions (i.e. vendor relationships as appropriate, VARB, cost benefit analysis). Prepares financial analyses and assists with launch of new programs. Manages, and prepares analyses for, budget preparation, monitoring of resource utilization, and identification and prioritization of capital needs.
  3. Acts as consultant for all perioperative operations leaders including: Medical Director, Perioperative Services, Senior Nursing Director, Directors and Manager, Surgical Services.
  4. Drives efficiency strategies through process improvement methodologies. Maintains dashboards and metrics developed in collaboration with clinical leadership.
  5. Works with the Department of Surgery Chair and, Medical Director and Nursing Director of Surgery to craft and implement strategic analysis, planning and programmatic design. Participates in business planning for key strategic initiatives within perioperative services with a role in analytics, research and recommendations as needed.
  6. Serves as a key link between perioperative staff, physicians, hospital administrators, and other departmental staff, such as finance, strategic planning/decision support, materials management, process improvement (lean), and support services (i.e. engineering, capital projects, IS). Coordinates projects and tasks which involve Materials management, Finance, Information Systems and Perioperative Operations and works with leaders and staff in these areas.
  7. Provides project management for defined projects within perioperative services and leads projects as assigned by Chair and/or Director of Surgery.
  8. Attends Perioperative VSA Steering Committee, VARB, Supply and other meetings, as assigned by Director. Attends weekly Block Committee Meetings, Chiefs/Medical Directors meetings ad hoc, as directed by Chair of Surgery and Director. Provides project updates to Senior Surgical Services Leadership group at standing monthly meetings.

10. Supports initiatives and projects within Perioperative Services, under the direction of the Director of Surgery and as requested by Chair of Surgery.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college required.
  • Master’s degree preferred: MBA, MHA, or MPH
  • Two years related experience in health care.

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands –

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
