The Lead Lab Assistant performs various lab support procedures in assigned areas which includes phlebotomy and outpatient services. He/She assists the Department Manager in scheduling, assigning the workload for the shift and troubleshooting problems.

Performs any other task as assigned by Department Manager.

The Lead Lab Assistant will:Performs various activities to facilitate operation of an assigned department or work area; acts as a proficient resource for all departmental tasks and training as outlined below.Leads and guides the work of all lab assistant staff. Assists with training including phlebotomy, waived testing, and processing specimens. Provides basic coaching and mentoring of phlebotomy/lab assistants.Performs the duties of a lab assistant as scheduled, including specimen collection, maintain lab records, reports, ordering and inventory.Assist Lab Leadership with daily billing/charges/ and credits.Performs waived and some moderate testing, including: evaluation of QC performances and troubleshooting as necessary with the direction of of lab leadership.Performs required cleaning and maintenance procedures.Attends and participates in department meetings to include progress and updates with lab assistants duties and functions.In the absence of the Lab Leadership, facilitates workflow and problem resolution.Assists the Lab Manager with staffing of sick calls or schedule changes as they occur, documentation and update sick calls on a point system chart.Provides resolution to customer service issues within guidelines and supports education to clinical staff.Follows and assist the supervisor in monitoring and assuring appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, hand hygiene, and hazardous chemical handling.Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.Point of Care Testing: (POC)-Assists Lab manager with POC training, testing and the education process for new employees at VVMC.Assist Lab Leadership and Lab Techs with waived testing eg. Influenza, RSVs Streps, Occult Blood, GatroOccults, Hemachron ACT, Fetal Lac, ect.Assist Lab Techs in plating cultures, preparing gram stains, and removal of negative blood cultures from the Bactec.Acts as a mentor in assisting the lab technicians with education, and difficult lab draws.Ensures turn around times are met for lab draws and results. Discuss with lab assistants on a monthly basis of any TATs that are not within the appropriate times.Outpatient Laboratory: Oversees the daily activities of the Outpatient Lab to include, but not limited to: Ordering, prioritizing, assisting with draws and testing.

Regular duties of Lab Assistant:Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing and transporting specimens.

Rotates and Maintains adequate stock of supplies

Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic and organized manner.

Performs clerical duties including answering phones, data entry, faxing and filing.

Ensures all heel, and port charges are given to manager

Ensures all STATs, and TIMED draws are collectedly on time and all routine draws are collected reasonably manner.

Ensures transfer of documents to Lab Corp and sending appropriate amount of sample for reference testing

Assist Emergency Department with all phlebotomy, especially stat Troponin testing

Performs the tuberculin skin test (also called a Mantoux tuberculin test) on new hires.Greets all patients and visitors using VVMCs mission, vision, core values and AIDET, standards and protocols.

Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent X Technical or Vocational training X Required

Certified by an accredited school
