Description

JOB PURPOSE:
Responsible for ensuring that the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory provides high quality and comprehensive histocompatibility and immunogenetics testing that is in compliance with all regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and other pertinent regulatory bodies. Interprets all histocompatibility and immunogenetics testing, delegating as appropriate to Histocompatibility Technologists.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensures that consultation is available 24/7 (on-site, via telephone, or electronic) to evaluate patient and donor compatibility for organ transplantation, remaining available to all staff members to address issues of clinical concern and that 24/7 availability is communicated with laboratory clients.
2. Reviews, interprets, and verifies test results in consideration of patient diagnosis and medical management (e.g. HLA typing, antibody testing, crossmatches).
3. Oversees clinical operations of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Lab. Has no direct reports, but is accountable for the clinical functions of all staff members to ensure that clinical testing duties are properly performed.
4. Identifies continuous improvement opportunities.
5. Ensures compliance with applicable HLA Laboratory regulatory and accrediting agencies.
6. Ensures the highest standards of patient safety, quality, outcomes, and service.
7. Participates as a clinical leader in the strategic planning process for the Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory, focusing on innovation and state-of-the-art clinical care.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Must demonstrate a working knowledge of basic and advanced technical and procedural aspects of HLA testing
Must have communication and collaboration skills needed to work closely with the multidisciplinary teams supporting the Piedmont Transplant Institute

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
M.D., D.O, or Ph.D. in science

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Must have at least two years training or experience in histocompatibility testing in an OPTN approved training program or three years’ experience under an OPTN histocompatibility laboratory director.

MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
Must meet the qualifications of a director of high complexity testing according to federal CLIA requirements defined in 42CFR §493.1441. An M.D. or D.O. must have a license to practice medicine in Georgia. Candidates with a Ph.D. must possess certification as a Director by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
