Director - Radiation Safety

Job Summary: Oversee and direct the operations of the BIDMC Radiation Safety Department and its affiliated institutions . The Radiation Safety Department has five major roles: to provide (1) a safe & effective broad scope radioactive material radiation safety program ,(2) oversight of the safe use of radiation generating machines, (3) technical assistance & expertise in the treatment of patients with radiopharmaceutical & brachytherapy therapy, (4) Laser Safety Officer staffing & Laser Safety Committee services for BIDMC, and (5) review of IRB protocols (BIDMC/DFCI).
- Serve as the BIDMC Radiation Safety Officer, the duties of which are defined in DPH regulations 105 CMR:120.515 and in the BIDMC Radiation Safety Manual. Assures overall functioning and quality of the Radiation Safety Department and the services it provides.
- Account for the day-to-day work of Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and for its interface with the Committee on Clinical Investigations. Represent BIDMC in interaction with all federal and state regulatory agencies.
- Lead the development of broad goals for regulatory and legal compliance. Ensure all required federal /state radioactive material licenses and certificates of registration (x-ray) are current and in good standing.
- Provide appropriate radiation safety services and develops effective working relationships with the BIDMC commuity with radioactive material and/or machines which emit ionizing radiation. Examine and evaluate programs and operations to ensure patient/customer satisfaction and quality are continuously addressed
- Develop and ensure compliance with, the Department budget which includes both clinical and research community components, and contracted work at other institutions.
- Oversee the recruitment and hiring of all staff in the Radiation Safety Department. Provide professional growth opportunities and challenging assignments to Radiation Safety Department staff to ensure continued career development.
- Create and articulate vision and identity for the BIDMC Radiation Safety Department. Lead change efforts and set strategy and performance goals. Participate and lead Medical Center committees initiatives. Collaborate to formulate organization wide initiatives. Understand and apply comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices and theories of radiation safety.
- Identify areas for improvement, recommend actions and initiate corrective action as necessary. Exercise strong influence, persuasion, negotiation and motivational skills to change perceptions, secure commitment and achieve desired outcomes.
- Has the authority to direct and support managers with functional area responsibilities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: 4-6 Indirect Reports: None
- Has full responsibility for planning, monitoring and managing department budget.
- Master's degree required.
- More than 10 years related work experience required and 8-10 years supervisory/management experience required
- Progressively responsible experience in medical health physics& radiation safety operations, including radiopharmaceutical and brachytherapy therapy.
- Appointment as RSO is approved by the Massachusetts DPH as the Radiation Safety Officer for the Medical Center's licenses to use radioactive materials.
- Must pass investigative background check satisfactory to departmental, Medical Center, State, and Federal regulatory policies and standards. Possesses graduate education or equivalent experience to meet the criteria for RSO as defined in state regulations 105 CMR 120.050.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
- 4 Appointment as Radiation Safety Officer is approved by the Massachusetts DPH for the Medical Center and affiliated institution's licenses to use radioactive materials.
- Decision Making: Ability to make decisions with significant, broad implications for the management and operations of a major department or multiple departments. Participates in decisions on overall strategy and direction of the organization.
- Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are broad, complex and abstract, often involving Medical Center-wide issues and requiring substantial creativity, resourcefulness, staff engagement, Lean diagnostic techniques, negotiation and diplomacy to develop solutions.
- Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and priorities for functional area. May make recommendations for department policies, practices and programs. Manager or Director provides broad guidance and overall direction.
- Written Communications: Ability to communicate complex information in English effectively in writing to all levels of staff, management and external customers across functional areas.
- Oral Communications: Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts in English and address sensitive situations, resolve conflicts, negotiate, motivate and persuade others.
- Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate broad and comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex and/or unprecedented situations across multiple functional areas.
- Team Work: Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have implications for the management and operations of multiple areas of the organization.
- Customer Service: Ability to lead operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards and expectations in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas in a timely and respectful manner.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
