5 days a week with call responsibility.

The candidate for this position must be proficient in the surgical specialties areas of Trauma, Transplant, Neurosurgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Oral surgery

Position Summary:

Manages all Operating Room (OR) service line activities involved in the effective, efficient and economical utilization of material resources and personnel of the delegated service line. Ensures patient service is continuous and of a high quality. Works collaboratively with physicians, surgical services leadership and staff, materials management, and other ancillary departments. Oversees staff of delegated service line and reports to the Director of Peri-Operative Services.

Position Qualifications:

Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program required. Massachusetts Registered Nurse License required. Minimum of 3 years of experience working in an OR required. Must currently hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or successfully complete a BSN program within 36 months from the date of hire.

Must have a minimum of three to five years of recent OR experience in at least three of the following specialty areas:

  • Bariatric Colon-Rectal
  • General Gyn
  • MIS/Robotic Neuro
  • Orthopedics Ortho-Spine
  • Pediatrics Plastics
  • Pulmonary Thoracic
  • Uro-Gyn Urology
  • Urology (Open) Vascular

Certified Nurse in the Operating Room (CNOR) credentialing required or achieved within eighteen months of acceptance of position. Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification required, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred. Broad and thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing required. Previous leadership/management experience required. Membership and participation in professional nursing and community organizations preferred.

Must possess the interpersonal and communication skills to provide effective participative leadership and to interact with patients, families, physicians, and other visitors and staff.

Strong analytical skills required to perform various data analysis techniques, review statistical and budgetary information and synthesize information appropriately.

Major Responsibilities:

Promotes increased case volume through provision of a highly effective service line intraoperative program, development of positive relations with surgeons within responsible area, and implementation of new surgical procedures.

Motivates and manages assigned service line nurses, technicians, patient care associates, equipment and materials. Develops and implements action plans to improve staff development and mentorship’s. Acts as a professional leadership role model demonstrating consistent equity and accountability.

Manages the service line’s day-to-day clinical operations, including practice standards, staffing, budgets, fiscal management, and quality improvement. Rotates duties that contribute to efficiently operationalizing and facilitating the operative schedule.

Works closely with vendors to ensure equipment and instrumentation is available for all cases. Updates physician preference cards and monitors instrument tray usage.

Manages, plans, and monitors service line activities. Collaborates to makes assignments appropriate to the skill level of service line team and provides direct patient care as needed.

Identifies and coordinates the needs of service line physicians through scheduled meetings.

Collaborates with service line team to ensure all necessary equipment and supplies are available for assigned service lines’ cases.

Controls the turnaround time process through OR staff utilization coordination and oversees operating room schedule time compliance.

Communicates effectively with perioperative team members for continuity of care. Maintains satisfactory relations with other departments and nursing units. Participates in all phases of education, maintenance of records, and upgrading of policies, procedures, and skills of personnel.

Manages and controls service line expenditures within established budgets and describes variances. Develops and maintains service line preference cards.

Communicates effectively and respectively with the medical, nursing, and interdepartmental staff.

Manages assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.

Participates in the development of annual operational and capital budgets. Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.

Manages the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.

Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.

Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.

Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.

Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.

Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.

Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.

Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.

Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.
