The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) organizes and administers the department of Nursing Services and other services to attain the hospital’s objectives established by the governing authority. The CNO collaborates with other executives in the organization in decision making about health care services and organizational priorities.
Supports and develops the Directors in the coordination of employee selection, work assignments, performance evaluation and staff development for nursing services. Plans and coordinates with the Chief Executive Officer, utilizing the respective Directors for planning, the budgeting requirements for personnel, performance of work, supplies and equipment (responsible for cost controls to ensure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from the approved departmental budgets). Collaborates with Leaders from Governing Board, Management, Medical Staff and Clinical areas in planning, promoting, and conducting organization wide performance improvement activities. Initiates and maintains Universal Precaution protocols and infection control procedures. Represents assigned services at all Medical Staff and Board of Directors meetings. Participates with leaders in decision making processes and strategic planning. Knowledgeable of appropriate patient care and staff education; coordinates and facilitates professional development of nursing services employees. Recommends the modification, addition or deletion of personnel policies to ensure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions to provide patient care coverage. Reviews and approves with Department Directors the current staffing patterns and patient care needs of individual departments. Demonstrates protection of patient rights as evidenced by compliance with policies related to informed consent, DNR, ethical issues and resolution of patient complaints. Accepts responsibility as designated by the CEO. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Proficiency in written and verbal communications
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public
Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience in a health care institution
Emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress
Graduate of a state accredited school of professional nursing
DNP Enrollment or Completion preferred
NE-BC and NEA BC Preferred
Current license as an RN in the state of Pennsylvania
